2024 Annual: Special Topic "Water"

THE AIM AND MISSION OF THE ARTS SHOW

On the occasion of the 295th anniversary of the canonization of St. John of Nepomuk, we announce the 2nd year of the international competition show of children's artistic expression St. John's Bridges for all children and youth from 4 to 16 years of age, as well as adults over 17 years of age (new non-competitive category "Young in Heart"). Individuals and groups can be registered for the competition by parents or institutions (e.g. educational institutions, parishes, children's leisure organizations, etc.).

The main goal of the arts competition is to promote the development of children's artistic expression and communication amongst children of different nations through the use of artistic language. We also see benefits in the opportunity to learn about varied art cultures and different ways of artistic execution, especially in those countries of Europe and South America, where the twin towns of Nepomuk are located.

PERMANENT THEME

The mission of the exhibition is to bring together young people from different countries in the world on the grounds of the legacy of St. John of Nepomuk and to help overcome the distance between people not only in a geographical but also in a figurative sense. The profound life story of St.John of Nepomuk presents a strong motive to learn about the Christian roots of Europe, and in the countries of American continents as well. Therefore, the permanent theme of the show is the symbolism of the bridge between man and God, between people and between nations. Each year, an additional special topic related to St. John's life, his attributes or patronage is announced, too.

THIS YEAR'S SPECIAL TOPIC: WATER

Water is one of the basic compounds on Earth. It covers almost three quarters of the surface of the globe. Living things and beings can only do without water for a limited period of time. In nature, there is a cycle during which the state of water changes due to solar radiation, gravity and the movement of the planet. However, the climate change is disrupting this cycle in many regions, manifesting itself in particular as extreme droughts and lack of moisture, or conversely heavy rainfall, snowfall or rapid snowmelt, as floods or snow calamities.

The UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of 2000 include halving the number of people without access to safe drinking water. In developed countries, access to drinking water, which is treated mechanically, chemically and by other methods, has so far been relatively easy. However, it is estimated that more than a billion people in the world do not have access to safe water. Meanwhile, problems with water sufficiency may also affect the developed countries of Europe in the coming decades. Some regions of Bohemia and Moravia are already experiencing a significant decline in water supplies, particularly in the dry months.

As a globally important topic as well as an important patrocinium of St John's, water has been chosen as the special topic of 20024 St John's Bridges Arts Competition.
